On December 14th, the Chinese-Italian Video Meeting on Spine Tumor - Surgical Technique of En-bloc Spondylectomy was held smoothly at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The meeting was organized by Dr. YE ZhaoMing, Director of the Orthopaedics Department of the hospital and Director of the Orthopaedics Institute of Zhejiang University, and hosted by Dr. LIN Nong, Chief Physician of the hospital. As the distinguished lecturer, Prof. Boriani, former President of AO Spine Italian, Director of Spinal Teaching Program and Head of Spine Tumor Surgery of the GSpine4 Spine Surgery Division IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi Milan, gave a scientific talk on spine tumor in the meeting, where Dr. HUANG Xin and Dr. YAN XiaoBo, Deputy Chief Physicians of the department, also shared their cases. There were more than ten orthopedic surgeons from the hospital watching online.
Chinese-Italian Video Meeting on Spine Tumor
On behalf of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Dr. YE ZhaoMing extended a warm welcome to Prof. Boriani and other experts in the meeting, and briefly introduced the current development situation and achievements of the hospital. He believed that through this video conference, two parties from China and Italy can dive into a deeper academic exchange to broaden each other’s horizons, which will greatly increase the quality of diagnosis and treatment of spinal tumors and create a better future for the development of bone tumour surgery. He also envisioned that this academic exchange could make its contribution to improving people’s bone health and building a healthier China!
Then Prof. Boriani started his highlight lecture, titled "EnBloc Resection of Bone Tumors of the Spine". Prof. Boriani emphasized that when planning EnBloc Resection in the spine, two questions need to be addressed a) when En Bloc Resection is appropriate? b) when En Bloc Resection is feasible? He pointed out that the margins are the oncological point making appropriate EnBloc Resection while planning it is based on the anatomical constraints and tumor extension. According to Enneking Staging System, Prof. Boriani introduced the surgical margins applicable to bone tumors at different stages. And based on the Weinstein-Boriani-Biagini (WBB) stage system, he also shared with us seven different kinds of procedures to perform EnBloc Resection with some detailed cases and imaging as a support.
Dr. HUANG Xin, Deputy Chief Physician of the Orthopaedics Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, presented a case report on thoracic metastases.
Regarding to the question of whether the tumor was a primary tumor or a metastasis, Prof. Boriani agreed with Dr. HUANG that to make the right diagnosis, the patient's medical history should be considered and more importantly, a biopsy and CT scan should be done accordingly. As for the question of whether to go for a palliative surgery or En Bloc Resection when tumor recurrence happened three years after the surgery, Prof. Boriani said that En Bloc Resection should be done at the very first surgery, which can provide a good local control and reduce the risk of recurrence after surgery, but surgeons should also consider the pros and cons before the surgery, after all, there is only one shot to perform bone tumor surgery for the patient.
Dr. YAN XiaoBo, Deputy Chief Physician of the Orthopaedics Department, also presented a case report on costotransverse joint chondrosarcoma. Prof. Boriani also approved of the diagnosis and treatment solution that Dr. YAN proposed for the patient, and gave his advice on optimizing the surgery by changing the surgical approaches.
At the end of the meeting, Dr. LIN Nong, Chief Physician of the Orthopaedics Department, expressed his thankfulness to Prof. Boriani for his impressive sharing, and warmly invited Prof. Boriani to visit Hangzhou and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine after the epidemic for further academic exchanges.
Prof. Boriani also thanked for the invitation from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Gloryren to this wonderful meeting, and expressed his appreciation for the hospital’s skills, saying that both parties from Italy and China had benefited a lot from this meeting. He hoped in the future there would be an opportunity to visit the hospital to closer academic exchanges for mutual improvements.
